Problems about children and money when a relationship ends

Legal aid covers 2 options, depending on your situation.

Legal aid for family mediation

A trained mediator will help you and your ex-partner make decisions about your children and money. You do not need to be in the same room.

About family mediation

Family mediators are trained professionals. They help you and the other parent agree on things like where your children live, contact with children, money and property.

  • Mediators do not take sides or tell you what to do.
  • It is not relationship counselling.
  • You can choose to do mediation by phone or video call.
  • You do not have to see or speak to your ex-partner.

Mediation is probably not right if your ex-partner is abusive, controlling, or putting your children at risk.

Legal aid if there is domestic abuse or a child is at risk

You could get legal aid for advice and help in court. Domestic abuse can include:

  • controlling behaviour, emotional or financial abuse
  • harassing, stalking, threatening or hurting you
  • putting a child at risk

This could be by a partner, ex-partner or family member.
